Anonymous asked: How did you get your job at Karmaloop?

my friend was moving to another country and thought i would be a good fit to replace him at his job in merchandising/copy writing. then someone else got his position and i got hired into customer service to replace that person.

after a year of grinding, and delighting in being able to wear whatever the fuck i wanted to work, one of the owners of the company and the head women’s buyer asked me if i would be interested in a position in buying because they had noticed i had an eye for trends and also gotten great recommendations from my CS manager (also i was about at my wits end in customer service so it was perfect timing). from then on i was promoted to buying assistant, then promoted to beauty/intimates buyer and stylist, and finally just now to apparel buyer.

i am so grateful to my friend who got me in here for my first interview, and for my year in customer service. i would not have the work ethic and drive i do now had i not done that year in hell (okay not hell… but just to give you kind of an idea of how this company has evolved, when i started in customer service there were 4 of us. FOUR of us answering everyone’s calls, emails, and IMs. now there are about 100 customer service reps, with multiple supervisors and departments. and we also have an HR department now so that makes things a bit better in regards to office drama and politics. it was very different back then.) but i love my CS manager, and i love my job now. so it was all worth it.

moral of this story, don’t be too proud to do anything. work the worst of the bottom jobs, and you will make your way to the top. give it your all and don’t forget WHO you are. if i hadn’t been so conscious of wanting to be fully MYSELF and to express myself through my wardrobe (i wore a LOT of funky shit back then, if you take the time to scroll to the back on my tumblr you’ll see haha) and also make connections by being kind and helpful and resourceful i would not be where i am today. don’t ever lose yourself because you think it will make other people like you more.

anything is possible in this day and age. just do your best to be a kind, honest, decent, humble person on your way to the top.
