this is the first time in my life (outside of doing gymnastics for most of my youngest years and crew in highschool) that i’ve ever been motivated to stick with working out. this is due in part to the fact that my metabolism is now like, “fuck you, you basically eat shit on purpose and i won’t stand for it ANYMORE! I’M GONNA GAIN ALL THE WEIGHT I WANT IF YOU KEEP SITTING ON YOUR ASS” and also because it’s SO good for my happiness (endorphins out the wazoo) and gives me so much more energy throughout the day. working out also motivates me to eat better!
here’s a general outline of the morning workout i usually do:
- light weight training. rotating from two 5lb weights to a 7 lb weight to a 15 lb weight i do leg lifts, side crunch things, and back/ab work. (these are hard to explain because i don’t know the real names for anything. maybe a video would help?)
- then for 25-30 minutes i do cardio interval training. either the elliptical or treadmill. push yourself while doing this! generally if i’m running i’ll do a fast paced walk/jog for 4 minutes, then a fast run for 3, and so on until the time is over. generally this ends up being about 3 miles, if you’re measuring by distance.
- then i either work on abs for another 30-45 minutes; rotating through a variation of crunches, leg lifts, kicks, light weights, pelvic thrusts, and suicides (for added cardio to keep the heart rate up)
- 30-45 minutes rotating through a circuit of weight training machines for arms, back, and legs, crunches on a medicine ball, and jumping rope for a minute.
then i sit in the eucalyptus steam room with my girlfriends (who generally do about the same workout with me, varying on their level of ability) and bond/chat/vent. it’s so therapeutic working out with friends and then being able to hang out with them while we steam and then get ready for work. we get to share beauty tips as well as clothes, and just having that girl time is a great health tip in itself.
i also do bikram yoga some evenings, which is fucking nuts. i don’t recommend counting calories (it’s depressing) but if you do, bikram burns about 800-1200 calories per class. you will sweat more than you ever thought you could. it is a more intense workout than i do in the morning by far. but you will leave feeling amazing, i guarantee it.
getting in shape is amazing for making you feel better about how you look, but the most amazing part is how much better it makes you FEEL.
