On just being real.

I received a friend request the other day from some random girl I’ve never recalled meeting or seeing before. As we had some mutual friends and I’m prone to be awful at remembering names and faces, I sent her a quick message inquiring as to whether or not we’d met before.

Her response was some completely contrived story about how one of her guy friends was trying to stalk me but was mistakenly signed on to her Facebook and so that’s how she ended up requesting me.

I mean maybe. But if that was the case why wouldn’t you just cancel the request when you realized the mistake?

I don’t know if I seem really intriguing or something, or stalkworthy in the slightest.. I guess that’s flattering? Maybe she really just wanted to check me out. Whatever. But if she had just been like, “I saw we had some mutual friends and thought we’d get along” or something along those lines I probably would have accepted and even tried to get to know her. Instead I’m left with this bad taste in my mouth and a general creeped out feeling.

I could be overreacting. I just get too many of these weird “random” friend requests from people with ulterior motives. It’s not slick to send your best friend to add me cuz you want to be able to lurk my profile. It’s not cool to make a fake profile and add a bunch of my friends prior to adding me to try and fool me into thinking I know you. I don’t get why people are so tricky and elusive about Internet things.

I think maybe i need to deactivate my social networks. But in the end wouldn’t that be relinquishing power to the trolls? I should have just clicked accept. There’s nothing real to be learned on my Facebook. People just make me sick sometimes.
